Working hard and keeping up healthy habits

You know those weeks when you just never seem to stop? Well I’ve had one of those weeks. I think before I go on holiday I try and get loads done and see lots of people. I have been rather proud of myself though, recently when I’ve been going on holiday I’ve fallen into the trap of getting a bit lax with exercising and keeping up healthy habits. However this week I knew I wanted to go on holiday feeling my best, so as much as I’ve been busy, I’ve made healthy habits a priority.

Workouts this week…

  • Weekend: Rest
  • Monday: Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown Level 1 from You Tube // hula hooping
  • Tuesday: Gym – 20 minutes cardio, 15 minutes random strength exercises using dumbbells and barbell
  • Wednesday: Gym – 20 minutes cardio, 15 minutes random strength exercises on machines
  • Thursday: 10 minute jog // 5 minutes yoga
  • Friday: Gym – 30 minutes cardio, 15 minutes random strength exercises using dumbbells and barbell

Yesterday morning I had planned to do a You Tube video but I just wasn’t feeling it so I popped on the Vibrams and jogged twice round the block, then came home and did a few sun salutations. Sometimes just a really quick bit of exercise is all it takes to make you feel good! I find that focusing on how good you will feel after working out and thinking about all the positive results of your healthy habits is a useful motivator to keep you doing them even when you get busy and are starting to slip into holiday mode!

I have also been eating pretty well considering the time I’ve had. This meal that I made earlier in the week was utterly gorgeous:

I sautéed some red onion and chard with some lentils from a carton then added a sliced peach and splash of balsamic and topped with organic goats cheese. Really, really good. I might even blog this as a proper recipe, so quick, easy and tasty!

Peaches have been featuring in breakfast too:

I made some coconut flour pancakes with fried peaches and almond butter. Frying the peaches makes them so sweet!

On Wednesday I made a vanilla cheesecake green smoothie:

I blended spinach, vanilla protein powder, cottage cheese and unsweetened almond milk. I love the slight sweet and salty taste you get by blending in the cottage cheese, plus it goes super thick and creamy!

When I was looking back at my review post, I remembered that I had an ilumi meal in the cupboard to make a nice quick dinner:

I had the lamb casserole with some roasted cauliflower and spinach and it was lovely and filling!

Yesterday while I was working at home I thought I’d have a treat snack of raw chocolate and a cinder toffee almond milk latte:

    cottage cheese in a smoothie- I’ve been skeptical to try that but with anything sweet and salty- I’m up for giving it a go!

    The last week of august equates to week 5 of the semester a.k.a the beginning of weekly assessments for all subjects and mid terms- its a nightmare! When things get busier for me, its sleep that usually gets the backburner- I’m more productve in the morning which means earlier wake up times! i’ll be vicariously living through your Berlin antics! I hope you save room for a pork knuckle for me ;)

      Oh definitely try it! It’s so good, I made another today! Hope you find some time for sleep, I know I am just no good when I’m tired. I will be looking out for those pork knuckles!

      Thanks, it has been hard, I’m not great at multi tasking so when I have to focus on other things eating well and exercising feels much harder!

      Hi Camilla, those are Vibram Five Fingers, I got mine to review here for the blog but I can’t remember where they were from! I know a few online sports stores sell them if you give them a google :-)

    The last weekend of August I get that Sunday night feeling in a big way, as term starts next week! The summer always flies by! I have managed to see a few friends, pop to work, take some time at home and have little tidy ups here and there.
    I think when I am really busy I tend to opt for faster food options- snacks instead of proper meals and that is when things aren’t so good.

      Oh wow, the summer holidays do seem to have gone past so fast! Yep, I’ve totally been doing that just the last couple of days. I had M&S salad for dinner last night, so not too bad really!

    Cinder toffee almond milk latte? Erm, yes please! And I do love that raw chocolate – even if you feel you haven’t had the best time of it with regard to eating recently, at least you can control yourself around things like that :) I can’t trust myself with any of them – can’t even look at raw choccies in the shops because I know I will buy more than one, and thus eat more than one at a time.

    I haven’t had the best week – both of my heels are red raw at the moment and I’m at a loss as to what to do…not sure how much longer I can run through the pain to be honest :(

    You should be proud of yourself – I’m always impressed with how productive you are in every aspect of your life!

      Have you seen the Beanies coffee in sainsbos? We have a cupboard full now as James likes the vanilla! Raw chocolate I’m ok with, it’s stuff like green & blacks that I have probs with! Hope that your heels get better, that sounds so painful :-(

    The goat’s cheese meal sounds delicious. I just adore goats cheese. And simple meals are always a winner :)

      Simple meals really are aren’t they, I think that’s the thing, sometimes I think I can’t post something as a recipe cause it’s so simple!

    A quick run in vibrams and some yoga sounds like a beautiful way to get some healthy movement in. I slacked on the yoga-front since I started a regular gym routine – need to get it back in ASAP, it always makes me feel so much better.

    I also love this last quote. Just made a decision regarding the direction I want to go with my master thesis. It was hard to give up the old one, but the new one feels so much better. It really shows that life is so much easier and more enjoyable when you follow your passions.

    Also, like several other commenters have asked – how do you make a cinder toffee almond milk latte? It sounds (and looks) divine!

      Thanks Snenny! I have some cinder toffee flavoured coffee from Beanies (just google them) and then whisk up the almond milk in my blender and pour that on top, so delicious!

        Thanks Laura, I most definitely will! I’ve not tried getting a foam using one of those little latte whisks going using almond milk, I’ll have to try that too :)

    Hi Laura

    I’ve been absent from Blogland for some weeks now and am back catching up. I can’t believe how far you’ve come! You’ve done amazingly well, you must be soooooo proud of yourself. Your recipes continue to look amazing and so tasty.

    I now have quite a bit of time on my hands as I am recuperating from quite a big op, and once I’m back on my feet properly I am aiming to spend a bit more time in the kitchen……… My blender and a bag of spinach at the ready!
