A little bit of funk and soul

Last night James and I went to see Smoove & Turrell at Hoochie Coochie in Newcastle…

Hoochie Coochie is a great venue that plays soul, funk and jazz music and Smoove & Turrell are a local Geordie duo with a northern soul sound. The gig was sold out and the place was packed. We had an awesome night, it was so much fun! Before the gig we went to my parents to get ready, Outfit of the Day:

I thought I’d go with a fun vintage look, I very rarely wear my hair up like that but it made a nice change, I even stuck on a few false eyelashes and of course I am never without my red lippy!

We went for some dinner before the gig, we shared some garlic bread to start and then I had this delicious pizza:

The toppings on this included green peppers, spinach, red onion and goats cheese. We got a little shot of limoncello cream on the house cause its Christmas:

It always reminds me of our wedding in Sorrento, Italy because we drank so much of the stuff! Then we treated ourselves to a Starbucks (I had a mocha with cream) before meeting up with James Dad for a drink and then on to the venue. I had a lovely cocktail called a Red Manhattan which was made with Red Stag Bourbon and Cherry Liqueur and when I saw Hendricks Gin on the menu I couldn’t resist a Gin and Tonic. Luckily I didn’t feel the ill effects of the alcohol too much, I think that pizza on my stomach may have had something to do with it ;-)

I still drank some of my favourite Go Coco Coconut water this morning to make sure I was rehydrated:

Then for another treat, I made us scrambled eggs with organic bacon for breakfast:

I had some avocado with mine and followed it up with strong black coffee, delish!

Er, this is a healthy living blog, honest ;-) Haha, we had such a great time though, it felt like a proper date, James even danced a little! Now I’m sipping kuricha green tea and planning on a green smoothie (with toppings of course) for lunch. Good times!

How has your weekend been? Are you a fan of a bit of funk and soul? It reminded me how much I love listening to different genres of music – we are definitely planning a few return visits to Hoochie Coochie. I also loved that pizza, I know I’ve been talking about letting my hair down with food and I enjoyed every single bite! The toppings were especially tasty. What’s your favourite pizza topping?

  • Sounds like such a fun night, and you look gorgeous in that outfit! I love that you treat yourself and have a good time – health isn’t about eating 100% clean all the time, but about finding a balance between what’s good for the body and what’s good for the mind. Love you for that, Laura!

    • Laura

Thanks Amanda, life is for living after all!

  • Sounds like such a fab night, glad you had fun!

  • Looks like a good quality ‘splurge’ to me anyway – thin-crust pizza, some veggies on there…I think it looks delicious actually!

Hmm, funk and soul aren’t really my genre – with me it’s metal or pure, hideous cheese on my running playlists (not that they’re getting much use :P) For the last month I don’t think I’ve listened to anything that isn’t a Metallica song though!

    • Laura

Hope you are ok, I haven’t had the opportunity for a lot of blog reading this last week I’m guessing the runnings not as you wished right now? I think between me and James we have a fairly random taste in music – love a bit of funk and soul but don’t mind some Metallica either :-)

  • Mmm, my fave pizza is the goats cheese one from Pizza Express- with roasted peppers, spinach and caramelised onions- so good :)
Glad you had fun- I love seeing live bands although we hardly ever go any more.

I think that sounds almost the same topping as what I had, good to know that pizza express do a similar one too!

  • ooh love your dress – one of my fave colours! if phil and i go out to an italian i always have a pizza (and usually the goats cheese one) because life’s too short and i blummin love a good pizza!

Hear hear! It certainly is :-) I love goats cheese on a pizza!

  • That bacon looks so much better than the streaky stuff – and that pizza looks so good. I went for dinner at Pizza Express on Saturday and it was torture looking at all the pizzas I couldn’t eat!
It sounds like a great night out :-)

Ah I bet that was really torturous!

  • Bronagh

Love that dress! The whole vintage style really suits you :) Your pizza looks sooo good, I absolutely love pizzas/pasta dishes with goats cheese. I think it’s awesome that this blog is about REAL healthy living (i.e. going out and drinking and dancing and eating yummy pizza whenever you feel ike it) as opposed to eating salads all the time and living in the gym. You’ve got the perfect balance going on! x

    • Laura

Thanks chick, I do feel like I have the balance right at the moment, life is so much more fun when you can have those treats and not stress about them :-)

  • I’m more of a Indie music chick, looks like a greatevening though.
my favourite pizza topping? You know me I always love a touch of sweet in each and every dich, so I would have to say banana! people always seem to find this strange, yet pineapple is generally accepted. And believe me, the sweetness of slightly roasted banana is way better!

    • Laura

I like my indie music too, I guess I just like all sorts of random stuff! Oh I can imagine roasted caramelised banana is lush!

  • This all looks awesome! You look so lovely, I love getting all dressed up and going out with Trout. I tried some limoncello the other day at a friends house and it was YUM! We had it ice cold, in glasses that had been in the freezer, too. Wowza.

I love having a cheeky breakfast when I’m feeling the effects the morning after. I do love a good hash brown or beans and mushrooms on toast!
